Michigan Land Conservancy Invests in 1.15 MW Energy Storage by Advanced Battery

Date:

In a significant stride towards enhancing renewable energy capabilities, the U.S. Department of Energy has granted final funding approval for an innovative energy storage project in Traverse City, Michigan. The project, managed by Advanced Battery Concepts (ABC), aims to bolster the energy resilience of the Grand Traverse Regional Land Conservancy (GTRLC) by integrating a state-of-the-art battery system with existing solar infrastructure.

This ambitious initiative will see the installation of a 1.15 megawatt battery energy storage system at GTRLC’s headquarters, complementing its current 185 kilowatt solar photovoltaic array. The new system is designed to store solar-generated electricity, ensuring a more efficient and reliable supply of renewable energy on demand. The project marks a significant step in optimizing the use of clean energy resources and reducing dependency on conventional power sources.

Supported through Congressionally Directed Spending and administered by the U.S. Department of Energy, the project will utilize ABC’s patented GreenSeal® bipolar lead battery technology. This innovative approach requires considerably less lead than traditional lead batteries while maintaining the safety and recyclability that are hallmarks of lead-based battery chemistry. The batteries will be housed in three commercial-scale BOX-BEâ„¢ energy storage enclosures, underscoring the project’s commitment to advanced energy solutions.

With the funding now secured, the project has entered the procurement and manufacturing phase. Installation and commissioning of the system are scheduled for the second quarter of 2027. ABC, based in Michigan, is spearheading the development and manufacturing of the batteries, highlighting the state’s pivotal role in advancing the domestic energy storage supply chain.
