US Special Envoy Steve Witkoff has called on Russian President Vladimir Putin to restart trilateral peace talks with the United States and Ukraine, as part of a renewed diplomatic push by Washington to resolve the ongoing conflict. During a recent meeting in St Petersburg, Witkoff presented fresh proposals aimed at ending the war and explored potential steps toward a negotiated settlement, marking his ninth in-person meeting with Putin.
The discussions came on the heels of Witkoff’s meeting in Oslo with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, as well as Finnish, Norwegian, European, and NATO leaders. These talks focused on developing a coordinated strategy for negotiations with Russia and identifying elements for a comprehensive peace agreement. Key issues under consideration included security guarantees for Ukraine, postwar economic recovery, and the future of European security arrangements.
Putin reportedly expressed a willingness to collaborate with US President Donald Trump on various international issues, including Iran’s nuclear program. He also suggested the possibility of a future meeting with Trump in China, potentially involving Chinese President Xi Jinping.
President Zelenskyy has shown optimism for a trilateral meeting involving Trump and Putin to address the major hurdles in ending the war. However, the Kremlin has emphasized that any direct meeting between Putin and Zelenskyy would need extensive preparation to ensure meaningful results.
The latest diplomatic efforts underscore Washington’s intensified attempts to bring the involved parties back to the negotiating table, although significant challenges remain in reaching a mutually acceptable agreement. This renewed push for peace talks highlights the complexities of the conflict and the ongoing international efforts required to address it.
