Trump Announces Ukraine-Russia Energy Ceasefire, But Zelenskyy Wasn’t Informed

Date:

Amid ongoing tensions between Russia and Ukraine, U.S. President Donald Trump announced a ceasefire agreement aimed at halting attacks on energy infrastructure. The announcement, made via social media, indicated that both Russia and Ukraine had agreed to cease their attacks. However, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated he was not consulted and would only accept the ceasefire if Russia also committed to stopping its strikes.

The announcement follows a dispute between Washington and Kyiv over Ukraine’s long-range strikes on Russian oil refineries. President Trump had urged Ukraine to halt these attacks, while Zelenskyy insisted that any agreement should require Russia to end its assaults on Ukrainian energy facilities. Zelenskyy emphasized the need for reciprocal commitments and security guarantees to ensure compliance from the Russian side.

Despite the ceasefire announcement, Zelenskyy reported that Russian drones and airstrikes on Ukrainian energy infrastructure, including a thermal power station in Kharkiv, continued unabated. He noted repeated strikes on gas and oil facilities across Ukraine, underscoring the ongoing threat to the country’s energy sector.

Complicating matters, President Trump’s decision to ease sanctions on Russian diesel exports has sparked criticism from Zelenskyy, who warned that such measures could bolster Russia’s war efforts by increasing its revenue. Trump argued that easing sanctions could help lower fuel prices ahead of the U.S. midterm elections, drawing further contention from Ukrainian leaders.

The disagreement between Washington and Kyiv has raised concerns among Ukrainian officials and European allies regarding the U.S. approach to resolving the conflict. Reports suggest that the U.S. might employ military procurement arrangements and economic incentives to push both Kyiv and Moscow toward accepting a ceasefire.

While Ukraine maintains its strikes on Russian oil facilities are necessary to undermine Moscow’s war financing, the continued bombardment of Ukrainian cities has reinforced Kyiv’s stance that any ceasefire must be mutually binding. Zelenskyy has engaged with European and international leaders to bolster support for Ukraine, with several European leaders calling for an immediate cessation of attacks on Ukrainian energy infrastructure.

The proposed ceasefire’s future remains uncertain, as there is no definitive confirmation of Russia’s agreement to its terms. This situation highlights the growing tensions between Washington and Kyiv over the conditions required to end the conflict and achieve lasting peace.
