Recently, President Trump controversially ordered the renaming of Lake Ontario to “Lake America,” a decision that has been met with widespread disapproval across Canada. Meanwhile, the top US trade representative has downplayed the repercussions of the ongoing dispute, suggesting that the economic fallout would adversely affect Canada more than the United States, and stated there are currently no active trade negotiations in progress.
The recent strain followed the collapse of trade negotiations between the US and Canada about a week prior. In retaliation for this breakdown, Washington imposed a 50% tariff on $20 billion worth of Canadian imports. As one of the US’s largest trading partners, Canada announced it would counter with its own tariffs on $20 billion of American goods, scheduled to commence on September 8. The US trade representative attributed much of the blame for the failed talks to Canadian demands, particularly citing issues like reduced taxes on heavy-duty trucks as a significant stumbling block.
