In a bid to advance peace negotiations with Russia, US representatives Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff held discussions with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Kyiv on Sunday. This meeting followed their engagement with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow, which took place the day prior. Witkoff described the discussions with Zelenskyy as “very constructive and substantive,” expressing optimism that broader talks involving the US, Ukraine, and European countries could soon be on the horizon.
During the Kyiv talks, national security advisers from Britain, France, and Germany briefly participated, highlighting the international interest in resolving the conflict. Zelenskyy emphasized Ukraine’s desire to initiate trilateral discussions with the US and European partners to further peace negotiations. He also highlighted the importance of continued Western support as Ukraine braces for another challenging winter, stressing the need for air defense, energy assistance, and an increase in supplies of US liquefied natural gas.
Despite these diplomatic efforts, peace negotiations remain at an impasse due to significant disagreements, particularly over territorial control in eastern Ukraine. Previous discussions have centered around a 20-point peace framework put forward by Washington and Kyiv, but key issues remain unresolved between Russia and Ukraine.
Meanwhile, Russian military actions continue to impact Ukraine, with at least eight people reported killed and 69 injured in various parts of the country over the previous day. Kyiv has been facing persistent drone attacks, and Ukraine is currently dealing with a shortage of US-made Patriot interceptor missiles. As the conflict nears its fifth year, Ukrainian officials are increasingly concerned about the potential for further Russian assaults on energy infrastructure, especially as winter approaches, which could result in escalated strikes.
