Under the leadership of President Claudia Sheinbaum, Mexico is working to restore its security collaboration with the United States, following a period of tension during the tenure of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador. The renewed efforts are seeing significant contributions from Security Cabinet coordinator Omar García Harfuch, who has been actively engaging with US officials. These meetings focus on critical areas such as intelligence sharing and combatting organized crime. Mexican authorities highlight that the expedited exchange of information is enabling a quicker response to criminal activities.
Since Sheinbaum took office, there have been substantial reports of progress, including the arrest of tens of thousands of individuals, substantial seizures of weapons and narcotics, and the dismantling of numerous illegal drug labs. Mexico has also stepped up the extradition of high-profile criminal suspects to the US and reports a marked reduction in fentanyl trafficking. This new phase of cooperation represents a departure from López Obrador’s administration, which saw the closure of a US intelligence unit in Mexico and imposed stricter controls on foreign security agents.
Relations between the two countries took a further hit in 2020 with the arrest of former Defense Minister Salvador Cienfuegos and ongoing disagreements over organized crime investigations. The situation was exacerbated in 2024 with allegations that drug money had been tied to López Obrador’s 2006 presidential campaign. Although these allegations did not lead to formal charges, they strained the trust between Mexican authorities and their US counterparts.
Despite the advancement in bilateral ties, President Sheinbaum maintains a firm stance on Mexico’s sovereignty, emphasizing the importance of mutual respect in its dealings with the US. Her administration has expressed concerns about perceived attempts by US officials to influence or create divisions within Mexico’s security framework. Consequently, while both nations aim to enhance their collaborative efforts against organized crime, Mexico remains steadfast that such cooperation respects its national interests and sovereignty.
