The United States Mint has started producing a new commemorative $1 coin that features former President Donald Trump, according to an announcement from the US Treasury Department. This release is part of the upcoming celebrations for the 250th anniversary of the United States, with the coin set to be available this fall. After gaining approval earlier this year, the design has undergone slight modifications, including a change to a gold-colored finish rather than being made of solid gold.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent explained that the coin is meant to pay tribute to America’s enduring legacy of liberty and patriotism. He highlighted that it symbolizes the nation’s enduring values and its steadfast commitment to freedom. The coin’s front showcases a portrait of Trump, accompanied by the word “LIBERTY,” the dates “1776–2026,” and the inscription “IN GOD WE TRUST.” The reverse side features the iconic bald eagle from the Great Seal of the United States, along with the national motto “E PLURIBUS UNUM.”
Despite the celebratory intent behind the coin, its announcement has sparked controversy. A longstanding federal law typically bars living presidents from being depicted on U.S. currency. Nevertheless, officials from the Treasury have asserted that the secretary possesses the authority to approve commemorative coins under certain conditions.
