In a significant development for the American steel industry, President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a monumental $15 billion steel plant in eastern Iowa. This facility, set to be developed by Mesabi Metallics—a company under the India-based Essar Group—promises to be the largest of its kind in the United States. With construction already underway, the plant is anticipated to commence production by 2030.
The new facility will leverage iron ore sourced from Mesabi Metallics’ mine in Minnesota to produce high-quality steel aimed at the U.S. market. The endeavor is expected to generate substantial employment opportunities, creating up to 6,000 jobs during the construction phase and nearly 2,000 positions in manufacturing and mining once operational.
Federal backing plays a crucial role in this project, with the U.S. Export-Import Bank slated to provide up to $10 billion in financing. Rewant Ruia, chairman of Mesabi Metallics, emphasized the commitment to sourcing most critical materials domestically, although he acknowledged that certain specialized materials might require importation.
President Trump attributed this substantial investment to his administration’s tariff policies on imported goods, which he claims have incentivized companies to bolster domestic manufacturing. This announcement comes at a politically strategic time as Iowa gears up for the 2026 Senate election, where industrial investments and job creation are poised to be key issues.
